Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, remove the air filter housing, move the shift lever to the Park (P) position, disconnect the shift cable end from the transaxle, remove the nut securing the shift cable to the shift lever, remove the bolts securing the cable casing, unbolt the airbag control unit from the floor pan, unbolt the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), remove the two nuts that retain the grommet plate, move the shift lever to the Park (P) position, loosen the two shift cable mounting bolts, while holding the shift lever forward against the stop, tighten the shift cable mounting bolts securely, move the shift lever to the Neutral (N) position, measure the distance between the indicated points, if the distance is incorrect, loosen the two shift cable bolts and adjust the shift cable to achieve the specified distance between the measurement points, check the operation of the transaxle in each shift lever position, put the shift lever in the Neutral position, put the transmission manual control lever in the Neutral position, loosen the cable adjusting nut on the manual control lever, push the cable toward the manual control lever to eliminate freeplay, then tighten the cable adjusting nut, and have an assistant move the shift lever inside the vehicle through its range of gear positions and verify that the manual control lever moves freely.
