Clean and de-carbon the flange mating surfaces thoroughly with appropriate tools and solvent until smooth and free of old gasket material. 2. Replace any corroded or damaged fasteners or studs with new hardware designed for exhaust service. 3. Position the new gasket correctly-note some gaskets are directional or have locating tabs-and align the pipes to the marked orientation. 4. Install flange fasteners by hand to hold the flange together, ensuring the gasket remains seated and alignment is maintained. 5. Tighten fasteners progressively and evenly in a crossing pattern where applicable; tighten to the vehicle manufacturer's torque specification if available. 6. Reinstall any exhaust supports or heat shields removed earlier and lower the vehicle if raised. 7. Reconnect the negative battery cable. 8. Start the engine, inspect the flange area for audible or visible leaks while idling, then perform a short test drive and recheck fastener tightness after the initial heat cycle. Repair tip: Always use a new gasket and new or lightly used corrosion-resistant fasteners; if studs are seized, consider replacing the stud and nut rather than risking flange damage.
