- Q: How to Replace an Engine Cooling Fan Assembly on Kia Spectra?A:When you buy Sephia or Spectra air-conditioned cars, you get two fans working to cool down your car. You can see if your engine is getting too hot and the cooling fan isn't turning on by disconnecting the fan's electrical connection and connecting directly to the battery to test the fan motor. If the fan does not work, replace the motor. Ensure to also test the condenser fan motor. On cars built in 1997 or earlier, the condenser fan is in front of the cooling unit, so you need to remove the Radiator grille to access it. Never attach battery power to the connector on the vehicle's electrical system. There's a good chance the fan relays in the engine compartment under the hood are the ones that aren't working. Try the relay(s) to see if they work, and then look at the radiator fan switch, which is inside the thermostat cover and can be measured with an ohmmeter. The switch must stay open below 194-degrees F and move to closed position when reached 207-degrees F or higher. When both the fan relays and switch work, look over all wires and connections going to the fan motors. To replace the fan, park on level ground, release the brake, put chocks behind back wheels, lift up the vehicle front, and secure it using jack stands. Unscrew the lower splash guard, empty your cooling system, and only remove the fresh air inlet and coolant tank if needed. Measure and disconnect electrical wires connected to the engine cooling fan. Pull off any clamps holding wires in place. Unfasten the upper radiator hose. Then unscrew the bolts that lock the fan to the radiator. Turn off the electric fan, unhook the shroud from around the fan unit, and do two steps to take the electric fan's C-clip off. With screws, detach the fan assembly from its base. Installation is the reverse of removal. Fill up your cooling system with fluid and reinstate your battery connection. To fix the fan switch on 1994 and 1995 SOHC cars, empty the cooling system, remove the fan switch from the thermostat cover, and unscrew it. To reinstall, you put water in the cooling system, place a fresh O-ring covered in engine fluid, and confirm the fan works on initial engine start.
