Rebuilt CV axles can be exchanged, saving time and effort. Some stores offer "split" replacement boots that can be installed without removing the CV axle. However, it's recommended to remove and clean the CV axle and CV Joint. For INNER CV JOINT - TRI-POT TYPE: Replace the outer boot if needed, remove old clamps and boot, and clean the outer race and tri-pot bearing assembly. Check for wear after cleaning. During reassembly, slide the new boot on, install the outer snap-ring, use CV joint grease, and install new boot clamps. For INNER CV JOINT - BALL-AND-CAGE TYPE: Remove boot clamps, clean components, and inspect for wear. For reassembly, slide the new boot on, install the inner race and cage assembly, and install clamps. For OUTER CV JOINT AND BOOT: Remove the inner CV joint, remove the boot clamps, and clean the joints. For reassembly, slide the new boot on, add grease, and install new clamps. Reassemble the inner CV joint and install the CV axle.
