Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the center console. For transmission models, remove the nuts that secure the cable housing and cable to the shifter, while for transaxle models, remove the retaining clip and clamp that secure the cable housing to the bracket and shift lever. Feed the cable through the instrument panel area and through the grommet in the firewall. Disconnect the cable from retainers and interfering components. For transmission models, remove the cable cover housing, the cable retaining pin and washer, and detach the cable. For transaxle models, remove the cable bracket bolts, the manual lever nut, and disconnect the cable from the lever at the transaxle. Finally, remove the cable from the vehicle, and installation is the reverse of removal.

Apply the parking brake and place the shift lever in Neutral, then unscrew and remove the shift lever knob. Next, remove the center console assembly. Use pliers to take out the pins from the ends of the shift cables and pull the cable housing retaining clips out of the shifter base. Locate the shift cables at the transaxle and remove their retaining clips, then pull the pins out of the transaxle ends of the shift cables. Feed the cables through the firewall grommet for removal, and check the end bushings for any signs of looseness or damage before replacing the cables. Installation is the reverse of removal.
