The catalytic converter is an emission control device that reduces pollutants in the exhaust gas stream. It consists of two types of converters: the oxidation catalyst, which reduces hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide levels, and the reduction catalyst, which lowers oxides of nitrogen levels. These two catalysts are combined into a three-way catalyst. The converter's efficiency depends on the amount of oxygen entering it, as it needs oxygen to convert pollutants into harmless compounds. The replacement procedure for manifold catalytic converters involves raising the vehicle, disconnecting the exhaust pipe, disconnecting the oxygen sensor wiring, and unbolt the converter from the exhaust manifold. For undercar catalytic converters, the procedure includes raising the front of the vehicle, supporting the converter with a floor jack, removing the bolts and gaskets from the flanges, and lowering the converter from the vehicle.
