Q:
How Do I Remove and Install a Front or Rear Driveaxle? Posted by Customer
A:
For the front Axle Shaft removal,First, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it on jackstands before removing the wheel. Unstake the Axle Shaft/hub nut with a punch or chisel, then use a large socket and breaker bar to remove it. Separate the lower control arm from the steering knuckle. Swing the knuckle/hub assembly out until the end of the Axle Shaft is free of the hub. If the Axle Shaft splines stick, tap on its end with a plastic hammer. Pry the inner CV joint out of the transaxle or off of the intermediate shaft, supporting the CV joints, and then remove the Axle Shaft. For installation, pry the old spring clip from the inner end of the Axle Shaft and install a new one. Apply multi-purpose grease around the splines of the stub shafts. Hold the Axle Shaft straight out and push sharply to seat the spring clip, ensuring the gap in the ring faces downward. Clean the Axle Shaft outer CV joint threads, coat the splines with grease, guide the Axle Shaft into the hub splines, and secure with a new nut. Reconnect the control arm, tighten fasteners, and stake the Axle Shaft/hub nut. Install the wheel and lower the vehicle, then tighten lug nuts. Add transaxle lubricant if necessary. For the intermediate shaft removal: Remove the Axle Shaft, then take out the bearing support mounting bolts and slide the intermediate shaft out. Check the support bearing for smooth operation. If roughness is detected, seek professional help for bearing replacement. For installation, lubricate the transaxle seal, guide the shaft into the transaxle side gear, and secure with mounting bolts. For rear (4WD Sportage models) Axle Shaft removal: Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it on jackstands before removing the wheel. Loosen the rear Axle Shaft/hub nut. Detach the trailing arm and the lateral arms from the rear knuckle. Pull out on the rear knuckle and separate the Axle Shaft from the hub. If splines stick, tap on the Axle Shaft end with a soft-faced hammer. Pry the inner CV joint out of the rear differential. For installation, replace the old spring clip from the inner end of the Axle Shaft. Apply multi-purpose grease around the splines of the stub shafts. Hold the Axle Shaft out straight and push in sharply to seat the clip, ensuring the gap in the ring is facing downward. Clean the Axle Shaft outer CV joint threads, coat with grease, guide into the hub splines, and secure with a new nut. Reconnect the rear suspension arms, adjust the knuckle to simulate normal height, and tighten fasteners. Stake the Axle Shaft/hub nut, install the wheel, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts. Add differential lubricant if needed.
