Relieve the fuel system pressure, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, disconnect the fuel supply and return lines from the fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit, disconnect the hoses and electrical connectors at the fuel pump, disconnect the fuel lines and the evaporative hoses at the tank, remove the bolt from the rear end of each of the two fuel tank retaining straps, disconnect the EVAP hose from the On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) hose and from the rollover valve hose, remove the fuel filler neck hose from the fuel tank filler pipe, remove the exhaust pipe, remove the heat shield, remove the fuel tank retaining strap bolts, remove the left and right rock shields from the front end of the fuel tank, remove the bolts that secure the parking brake cable brackets and push the cables aside, remove the exhaust system, on 4WD models, remove the driveshaft, loosen the hose clamps that secure the fuel filler neck hose, the fuel leveling hose and the EVAP ventilation hose and disconnect all three hoses, support the fuel tank securely, remove the fuel tank strap bolts and the straps, then carefully lower the tank a little, fully lower the tank, reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal, start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

Repairs to the fuel tank or filler neck should be carried out by a professional with experience in this work, and the tank should not be placed in an area where sparks or open flames could ignite the fumes coming out of it, especially inside garages where a gas-type appliance is located, as this could cause an explosion.
