The EGR system is used in four-cylinder models from 2001 to 2006 to reduce NOx emissions. It consists of an EGR valve, EGR Vacuum Solenoid, MAP sensor, PCM, vacuum hoses, and wiring harnesses. The EGR valve is controlled by vacuum and modulated by the EGR Vacuum Solenoid, which is controlled by the PCM. The MAP sensor provides information to the PCM for EGR system operation. To replace the EGR valve, remove the engine cover, disconnect the vacuum hose, remove the mounting bolts, and lift off the valve. Check for sticking and carbon deposits, clean if necessary, or replace. For the EGR Vacuum Solenoid, disconnect the wiring harness and vacuum hoses, label them, remove the mounting bolts, and take off the valve. Installation is the reverse of removal. The EGR MAP sensor is connected to the intake manifold and provides information to the PCM. Disconnect the wiring/vacuum hose connections, remove the mounting screws, and lift off the sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal.
