every model has a Supplemental Restraint System, or SRS, a frontal-impact air bag system that protects the driver and front-seat passenger from fatal injuries in the event of an automobile head-on collision. SRS is managed by the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC), also known as Airbag Control Module in the central part of the vehicle. There are several air bags such as the driver's air bag installed on the steering wheel, the, optional side curtain air bags located above the side windows and the passenger air bag mounted on the instrument panel. The system is initiated by front impact sensors and contains such parts as the clockspring and the AIRBAG readiness light. Furthermore, front seat belt retainers that house pre-tensioners of seat belts by retracting the belts on airbag operation. While the driver airbag inflator is fitted on the steering wheel hub, the passenger airbag which is relatively larger is attached to the centre console and supported by a steel frame. The passenger knee blocker is structural not inflatable unlike the driver side where inflatable version acts as a knee blocker. Side impact window airbag is another accessory available as an option and is mounted above the windows and the individual system is triggered by six side impact sensors. During a collision, the ORC/ACM sends current to the SRS, and during each vehicle start the status is checked, displayed by the AIRBAG readiness light. Get the ignition moved to the LOCK position and take off the negative terminal of the battery; take not less than two minutes for the backup power supply to drain. One should ensure that when opening airbags, the opening side is always oriented away from the body and live airbags should be taken back to a dealer for destruction. Regarding to the removal and installation of the driver airbag module and the clockspring there are some procedures to follow.
