Remove the rear
Brake Discs and inspect the thickness of the lining material on the shoes; if the lining has worn down to 1/32-inch or less, the shoes must be replaced. Wash off the brake parts with brake system cleaner before disassembling anything, then remove the hub assembly. Remove the lower return spring, spread the shoes, and remove the adjuster, noting its orientation. Remove the upper rear and front return springs, spread the shoes, and take out the strut. Remove the front shoe hold-down retainer and spring, then take the shoe from the backing plate. Remove the rear shoe hold-down retainer, spring, and rear shoe, and disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever attached to the rear shoe. Clean the backing plate with brake system cleaner, lubricate shoe contact areas with a light film of high-temperature brake grease, and use needle-nose pliers to pull back the spring and connect the parking brake cable to the lever. Install the rear shoe and hold-down spring and retainer, then install the front shoe and hold-down spring and retainer. Install the strut with the damper spring between the shoes, followed by the front and rear return springs. Clean the adjuster assembly and lubricate the moving components with the same grease, then install the adjuster, ensuring it faces the proper direction, and install the upper return spring. Install the hub assembly and brake disc, temporarily threading three of the wheel lug nuts onto the studs to hold the disc in place. Remove the hole plugs from the brake discs and adjust the parking brake shoe clearance by turning the adjuster star wheel with a brake adjusting tool or screwdriver until the shoes contact the discs and the discs can't be turned; back off the adjusters five notches and then install the hole plugs. Install the brake mounting bracket, pads, and caliper, tightening the bolts to the specified torque. Install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Set the parking brake with about 45 pounds of force and measure the distance that the pedal travels, ensuring it is within the range; if not, adjust the parking brake.
