Kia Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace Coil Springs and Shock Absorber on Kia Sorento?
    A:
If the struts or coil springs leak fluid, lose their damping ability, or become damaged with chipped, sagging or cracked coil springs, do not immediately decide to change parts as strut shock absorber assemblies are non-serviceable and must be changed once there is a problem. Often struts with springs are bought and sold, therefore, it will be possible to save time and efforts, so it is necessary to check the price and possibility of purchase of parts before disassembly of the car. One must invest in a good spring compressor and ensure that he follows all instructions that come with the product. Once the coil spring has been disconnected from the strut assembly; dispose it in a central point. To disassemble, first use a hydraulic spring puller to disconnect the strut/spring assembly then the following can be done; The separated strut and spring assembly should be placed in a vise, perhaps wrapped in wood or rags to prevent any scrapping or damage to the part The nut should not be over tightened as this can cause damage to the strut. Wielding to the tool manufacturer's instruction, position the spring compressor to the spring and tighten until there is no more pressure on the upper spring seat, which can be ascertained by shook the spring. Loosen the damper shaft nut and pull the nut and suspension support out and check for free movement of the bearing and replace if it is worn. Inspect the rubber gasket/portion of the suspension support as there can be a problem if it splits or separates. Take out the upper spring seat from the damper shaft and examine the item for cracks and toughness, replacing with new one if necessary; subsequently, take out the upper insulator. Ungently raise the compressed spring from the assembly with the ends directed away from you and place it aside. Pull the rubber bumper off the damper shaft, look at the lower insulator for signs of wear or cracking and to check the hardness of it and replace it if required. During the reassembly if the lower insulator is required to be replaced then fix it in a way that the dropped portion rests in the low part of the seat, the damper rod has to be pushed to its maximum extent as well as fitting the rubber bumper. Put the coil spring on the lower insulator so that the end is in the lowest position occupied, then insert the upper insulator as well as the spring seat, using the flats located on the damper shaft's hole. bolts the holes in the upper spring seat with those in the lower tighten the damper nut up to the manufacture recommended torque with the holes in the spring seats still in alignment unlock the spring compressor tool and then bolt the strut spring assembly.
  • Q: How to remove and install the front Coil Springs and shock absorber on Kia Optima?
    A:
To remove the shock absorber assembly, first loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and securely support it on jackstands before removing the wheel and supporting the lower control arm with a floor jack. Next, unbolt the brake hose bracket and wheel speed sensor bracket from the shock absorber fork, and disconnect the ABS wheel speed sensor wiring bracket if it interferes with your model. For 2006.5 and later models, disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the shock absorber fork. Remove the bolt that connects the fork to the lower control arm, then loosen the pinch bolt at the top of the fork and remove the fork. If disassembly of the shock absorber is necessary, loosen the damper shaft nut without removing it. Support the shock and spring assembly while removing the three nuts that secure the shock absorber to the shock tower in the engine compartment, then take the assembly out from the fender well. Inspect the shock absorber body for leaks, dents, cracks, and other damage, and check the coil spring for chips or cracks in the coating, as well as the spring seat for cuts and deterioration. If any issues are found, proceed with disassembly. For installation, guide the assembly into the fender well and insert the upper mounting studs through the shock tower holes, securing them with nuts to prevent the assembly from falling. Install the fork to the lower part of the shock absorber and the lower control arm, tightening all fasteners to the specified torque while raising the outer end of the lower control arm with a floor jack to simulate normal ride height before tightening. Reattach the brake hose bracket and ABS wheel speed sensor bracket, then install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque.
  • Q: How to remove the rear Shock Absorber from a Kia Sportage?
    A:
First, loosen the rear wheel lug nuts; then lift the whole back end of the car and stand it securely on jack stands. Keep the front wheels blocked, so the vehicle doesn't fall off the jackstands, then take off the wheels. We need to remove the stabilizer bar link from the strut by hand in 1998 and newer models. Undo any brake lines or ABS wiring that connects to the suspension strut. Put the floor jack under the rear knuckle to keep it from dropping. To get to the upper strut mounting nuts on Sportage models, you need to take off the trim covering. When your car has ABS, you need to take off two parts: the bracket that holds the wheel speed sensor on the strut, and the bar link that keeps the rear stabilizer bar attached. Take off the nuts from the strut's upper mounting point. Lower the rear knuckle carefully by hand while you keep it supported to prevent it from moving outward. Unscrew the mounting fasteners, take care to pull the entire strut apart from the knuckle unit. We need an assistant to hold the strut in place while the mounting bolts are being removed because the strut is too heavy and hard to maneuver by itself. Pulling out the parts, like we did before, works the same way but in reverse. We make sure all screws are tightened to the right specifications as we connect the parts.
