Kia Spectra Vapor Pressure Sensor

The Kia Spectra Vapor Pressure Sensor protects clean air by measuring the change in the fuel system pressure and allowing the evaporative emissions setup to trap and burn the gasoline vapors instead of releasing them. Mounted near the fuel tank and connected to the Kia engine computer, this Vapor Pressure Sensor makes continuous reports of vacuum or pressure as the purge valve and vent solenoid are closed so the module can check that the fuel tank is holding a constant vacuum, evidence that the system has no leaks. When numbers fall outside the threshold during two consecutive checks, the computer records a code and illuminates the dashboard warning, typically just because the fuel cap was left loose. Early versions of Spectra had a similar device with no built-in diagnostics, but later OBD II Kia Spectra models have a more sensitive digital Vapor Pressure Sensor that can detect pinhole-sized leaks. Shapes also vary, with some sensors clipped directly to the tank and others attached through a short hose, but all Vapor Pressure Sensors are based on a diaphragm inside the sensor that changes pressure into a five-volt signal. Swapping units begins by releasing the harness tab, verifying the five-volt supply with a voltmeter, then installing a corresponding Vapor Pressure Sensor to return readings to normal. Reliable Vapor Pressure Sensor data from the Kia component keeps wasted fuel and smog in check, keeping every Spectra efficient and compliant.

For all models except Sportage, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the rear seat cushion. Remove the fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit access cover. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel tank pressure sensor. Depress the release tab and disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel tank pressure sensor, then unscrew the retaining nut and remove the sensor from the fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit. Remove the fuel tank pressure sensor retaining nut and remove the sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal. For Sportage models, raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Remove the EVAP canister. Remove the fuel tank pressure sensor from the EVAP canister. Installation is the reverse of removal.
