To retract the steering column, put the wheels straight and then disconnect the lead of the vehicle battery's negative terminal, and then the connection to the airbag system. Subsequently, it is necessary to take out the shield of the
Steering Wheel, the steering column, and the lower panel under it that armor the instrument column. Remove the combination switch with the air bag clockspring, and make sure to disconnect the clockspring electrical connector. The shift interlock cable should be disconnected from the lock located near the ignition lock cylinder area, then the relationship of the steering column shaft U-joint to the intermediate shaft should be marked, and lastly, the pinch bolt should be removed. Pull off any electrical connectors you find which may hinder the removal; also, undo the steering column retaining bolts and ease the column from the instrument panel. For installation, guide the column back into position connecting the steering shaft U-joint with the intermediate shaft by bringing the marked line on both shafts together. Screw in the mounting fasteners and secure them with the advised torque; next, screw in the pinch bolt also. The remaining procedures are the reversal of the removal process with putting back the clockspring, steering wheel, and the airbag module.
