Loosen the wheel lugnuts, then raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands before removing the wheel. For 2009 and earlier models, unstake the axle shaft/hub nut using a hammer and punch; for 2011 and later models, remove the cotter pin and unscrew the axle shaft/hub nut with a long breaker bar. Detach the upper control arm and tie-rod end from the steering knuckle, then pry the axle shaft from the differential or axle housing. Swing the steering knuckle outwards and slide the axle shaft out of the hub, using a suitable puller if necessary. Pry the old spring clip from the inner end of the axle shaft and install a new one, lubricating the end splines with multi-purpose grease before raising the axle shaft into position while supporting the CV joints. Insert the axle shaft into the hub and install the nut finger tight, ensuring the splined end of the inner CV joint locks into the differential side gear or axle housing with the spring clip facing down. Complete the installation by reversing the removal steps, tightening the hub nut and lug nuts to the specified torque. For 2011 and later models, remove the steering knuckle and carefully pry the axle shaft from the differential, then follow similar installation steps as previously described. For rear 2011 and later 4WD models, remove the cotter pin and rear axle shaft/hub nut, followed by the brake disc, parking brake cable, wheel speed sensor connector, rear shock absorber, trailing arm, lateral control link, and stabilizer bar link. Support the lower control arm with a floor jack, detach it from the knuckle, and tap the axle shaft out of the hub with a soft-face hammer, using a puller if needed. Pry the inner end of the axle shaft out of the differential, then install a new spring clip, lubricate the splines, and insert the splined end into the differential. Insert the axle shaft into the hub and install the nut finger tight, completing the installation by reversing the removal steps and ensuring all fasteners are tightened to the specified torque while checking the differential lubricant level.
