    Q:
How to remove and install a front or rear Axle Shaft on Kia Sportage? Posted by Customer
    A:
For Sportage owners, first raise the vehicle, secure it with jackstands, remove the front wheel nuts, and raise the car to take it off the ground before you can put aside the Axle Shaft. Loosen the Axle Shaft hub nut with a punch or chisel, turn it slightly, and take it off completely; you can throw the old nut away. To take out the front Axle Shaft: slide the control arm lower part away from the steering knuckle, and push the knuckle/motor wheel assembly aside until the Axle Shaft end clears the hub. Strike the Axle Shaft end with a soft hammer if the splines don't slide apart by themselves. Keep the outer side steady with wire to safeguard your inner CV joint while you work. Lift the inner CV joint out of the drive transaxle using a screwdriver or prybar, put your hands on each CV joint for support, and pull the Axle Shaft from your vehicle carefully. Take a new spring clip, and put it where the old one was on the inner Axle Shaft end. We put multi-purpose grease on the Axle Shaft's spline ends, straighten out the Axle Shaft, and push it firmly into place until the spring clip locks. Apply grease to the threads of the outer CV joint and the splines of the Axle Shaft, and insert the axle into the hub while guiding it into place. Later, tighten the new Axle Shaft/hub nut well but don't use the correct torque value yet. Reattach the control arm and tighten all suspension fasteners according to specification. Also tighten the Axle Shaft nut to the right torque, then hammer it into the groove to keep it locked in place. Put the wheel on, screw in the lug nuts, let the car down, and make sure the lug nuts are tight at the correct amount of force. Also add transaxle lubricant if needed. First take off the Axle Shaft, unstick the bearing support mounting bolts, and pull the intermediate shaft out from the transaxle. Make sure the support bearing moves smoothly. First put grease on the lips of the transaxle seal, push the intermediate shaft into the transaxle side gear, and put and tighten the mounting bolts to the proper torque value. To finish installing this, just follow the steps in reverse. Before taking off the rear tire and wheel, raise the car by the rear end, place jackstands underneath, then loosen the lug nuts. Detach the trailing arm and lateral arms from the rear knuckle, push back on the knuckle with force to separate the Axle Shaft from the hub, loosen the rear Axle Shaft nut. Use a soft hammer to tap on the Axle Shaft end while holding its outer end with wire if the splines get stuck. To get the rear joint out of your vehicle's transmission, use either a big screwdriver or a heavy prybar. When you replace the spring clip at the end of the Axle Shaft, start by undoing the aging clip from the inner side. Installation works the other way around: spread grease over splines, keep the Axle Shaft straight, and quickly tap it into place until the spring clip seats. Apply grease to the threads of the Axle Shaft outer CV joint, insert the Axle Shaft into the hub, fit the new Axle Shaft/hub nut, and bolt it down meticulously but not to its required torque at this stage. Put back the suspension arms on the knuckle, lift the knuckle so that it matches normal driving height, and tighten all fasteners according to the correct torque requirements. Secure the Axle Shaft/hub nut at its required torque. Then tap it into the groove to lock it, install the wheel, apply lug nuts by hand, lift the car, and finish tightening the wheels to their correct torque. Remember to add grease to the differential when you're done.
