Q:
How to Remove and Replace a Driveaxle? Posted by Customer
A:
Set the parking brake, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the lug nuts and the wheel. Unstake the axle shaft/hub nut with a small punch or chisel, loosen the axle shaft/hub nut with a large socket and breaker bar, remove the brake caliper and disc, disconnect the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle, separate the control arm balljoint from the steering knuckle, pull out on the steering knuckle while sliding the axle shaft out of the hub, place a drain pan under the inner CV joint, remove the heat shield fastener and shield, then remove the intermediate shaft support bearing bracket bolts, support the outer end of the axle shaft and insert a prybar between the inner CV joint and the transaxle case, pry out sharply to disengage the inner CV joint from the transaxle, slide the intermediate shaft out of the transaxle, thoroughly clean the splines and bearing shield on the outer CV joint, thoroughly clean the splines and oil seal sealing surface on the inner CV joint, apply an even bead of multi-purpose grease around the oil seal sealing surface of the inner CV joint, push the axle shaft sharply in to seat the snap-ring on the inner CV joint stub shaft into its groove in the differential gears inside the transaxle, pull out on the inner CV joint housing to ensure it's seated, insert the splined intermediate shaft into the splined differential gears inside the transaxle, install the support bearing mounting bolts and lighten them, install the bearing heat shield and lighten the mounting bolts securely, tighten the steering knuckle-to-strut bolts, use a new pinch bolt and nut, tighten the axle shaft/hub nut, stake the axle shaft/hub nut using a hammer and punch, check the transaxle lubricant, adding some if necessary, tighten the lug nuts.

Q:
What are the signs of worn or damaged CV joints and driveaxle shafts? Posted by Customer
A:
Power is transmitted from the transaxle to the wheels through a pair of axle shafts, each consisting of an inner and outer constant velocity (CV) joint connected together by an axle shaft, with the inner ends of the axle shafts equipped with a tri-pot type joint and the outer ends with a ball-and-cage design, or "Rzeppa" joint. The boots should be inspected periodically for damage and leaking lubricant, and the most common symptom of worn or damaged CV joints is a clicking noise in turns, a clunk when accelerating after coasting and vibration at highway speeds. To check for wear in the CV joints and axle shafts, grasp each axle and rotate it in both directions while holding the CV joint housings, feeling for play indicating worn splines or sloppy CV joints, and also check the axle shafts for cracks, dents and distortion.
