- Q: What is the location and procedure for removing and installing the fuel pump and Fuel Level Sensor on Kia Optima?A:From 2001 to 2006, it is found at the rear of the Fuel Tank under the vehicle (raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands). From 2006.5 onwards, it's located under a cover in the trunk floor. Take off the cover and disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector. Relieve the fuel system pressure and remove the fuel tank cap. Disconnect cable from negative battery terminal. Remove fuel lines from top of fuel pump unit. Detach bolts that hold together: Fuel Pump/Fuel Level Sensor Mounting Flange. Carefully lift out the assembly containing: Fuel Pump/Fuel Level Sensor from Fuel Tank. Check if inlet strainer of fuel pump has contaminants. If dirty, try using some clean solvent and an old toothbrush to clean it. If while installed, strainer is too dirty to be cleaned, then this should be done after removing it from Fuel Pump/Fuel Level Sensor. In case you fail to properly clean replace it. Installation is opposite what was done when detaching.
