To disarm the steering column the automobile has to be positioned with the wheels aligned straight ahead, then the cable of the negative terminal should be disconnected. Subsequently, retract the steering wheel and switch the key on the ignition to LOCK so that the flow shaft will not twist as this may impair the airbag clock spring. Then, remove the upper and lower covers of the steering column, the driver's knee bolster and the metal web member behind it. Following that, take out the multi-function switch. Locate the lower universal joint on the steering gear pinion shaft or idler shaft and unbolt the pinch bolt which is on the universal joint. For models from 2006.5 and later, the following operations should be done: Remove the shaft dust cover bolts from inside the car. Take out the mounting nuts and bolts to pull out the steering column from the U-joint. For installation, align the steering column, slot the interconnecting shaft and place the nuts and U joint pinch bolt but do not tighten. Next, further tighten the column mounting nuts, as well as the pinch bolt to the recommended torque before ending the process by reversing the process of removal.
