Crankshaft itself can be removed only when the engine is out of the car; we can proceed with such things as the flywheel, crank shaft pulley, timing belt, oil pan, oil pump, oil filter, and piston assemblies. When checking the crankshaft end movement before the removal of the crankshaft, the use of a dial indicator placed along the line of the crankshaft is required; push the crankshaft to the rear in order to zero the indicator, then to the front to check the readings that should ideally range from 0.003 to 0.010 inches. If a dial indicator is not available with you, then you can measure the clearance with the help of feeler gauges. Turn the main bearing cap bolts in a ratcheting pattern until they can be fully removed and then strike the caps lightly with the rubber face of a soft hammer and lift them off. Lever the crankshaft out as far as possible; probably with some difficulty owing to its mass, reinstall the main bearing caps with the inserts still in them. For installation, both the engine block and crankshaft should be free from dirt, which must be cleaned and inspected, place the block with the bottom side up, and now remove any original bearing inserts and make sure to clean the surfaces properly. New upper main bearing inserts should be put in the block to the proper angles, so that the oil holes match up and the lower inserts should then be placed in the caps. Ensure that the Main bearing oil clearance is checked with Plastigage, make sure it fits in the range. If required, replace the bearing inserts with the one required for that size. Once wiping any Plastigage deposit, lubricate the bearing surfaces with a layer of grease to be put back the crankshaft. Bolt the two main bearing caps and then torque the bolts while applying force on the crank shaft to settle the thrust bearing. Remove the crankshaft and then apply anti-seize on the individual bolts and in identical pattern as before, tighten the bolts. Last of all, turn the crankshaft and make it to knock back and forth and fit a new rear main bearing oil seal.
