For the operation of an engine, having a good condition of drive belts is crucial and the drivebelts are positioned at its front. With time, drivebelts get stretched out and deteriorate which necessitates checking them once in a while. On most models, one belt transmits power to all accessories whereas in 2005 and earlier models there are two belts with the inner driving the power steering pump and outer driving air conditioning compressor and alternator. Open the hood to feel for cracks, separation, fraying or glazedness by running your fingers along each belt. Also check under each belt for even ribbing. In 2005 or older models you could test the tension on each belt by pushing it around halfway from pulleys with a deflection of about a quarter inch. To make adjustments to these belts it will be necessary to take off the right front wheel, safely support and raise the vehicle then remove either inner fender splash shield or drivebelt splash shield. The power steering pump belt can be adjusted by adjusting bolt that follows after loosening hinge bolt and lock nut on tensioner front bracket while air conditioning compressor/alternator belt is adjusted using bolt on tensioner adjustment arm but first loosen lock bolt on tensioner pulley also called adjuster pulley.. Replacement includes raising the vehicle securely by placing it steady above its wheels, removing wheel and splash shield as well as relieving pressure off those belts. Now follow reverse order instructions for installation making sure that each belt is centrally placed over its respective pulley when finally setting appropriate tension levels of all belts. For models beginning from 2006 onwards, one has to release automatic tensioner in order to replace worn-out belt while removal of mounting bolts followed by new tensioner assembly will bring replacement possibilities within reach . The splash shield should then be installed before securing wheel by tightening lug nuts only after putting on drivebelt as last step.
