To remove the steering column, park the vehicle with the wheels straight ahead and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Next, remove the
Steering Wheel and the steering column covers along with the lower knee bolster. Disconnect all electrical connectors from the large harness on the side of the steering column and any ground wires attached to the opposite side. For 2005 and earlier models, disconnect the brake transmission shift interlock cable from the steering column if equipped. Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft to the steering column coupler, then remove the pinch bolt and separate the intermediate shaft by compressing it. Remove the steering column mounting fasteners, carefully lower the column ensuring nothing is still connected, and take it out. For installation, guide the steering column into position, install and tighten the mounting fasteners, connect the steering column coupler to the intermediate shaft, and install the pinch bolt and nut, tightening it appropriately. Finally, reconnect the negative battery cable.
