Remove the battery and the battery tray. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts and the driveaxle/hub nuts, then raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheels. Depending on the type of wheels and the socket thickness, you may need to further loosen the driveaxle/hub nuts after wheel removal. Remove the lower splash shield. Take out the air filter housing and air intake duct assembly. Remove the coolant reservoir. Detach the transaxle oil cooler lines and plug them to prevent fluid spillage. Take off the heater hose bracket bolts, move the hoses back, and unplug all electrical connectors from the transaxle. Disconnect the
Shift Cable from the manual lever and bracket. Disconnect and remove the crankshaft sensor. Drain the transaxle fluid. Remove both driveaxles. Support the engine from above or place a jack under the transaxle. Remove the engine mount subframe. Take out the transaxle brace mounting bolts and braces. Remove the starter motor and the torque converter cover. Mark the relationship of the torque converter to the driveplate. Use a screwdriver between the teeth on the driveplate and the engine block at the transaxle to keep the engine from turning, then remove the torque converter-to-driveplate bolts. Support the transaxle with a jack, making sure to secure it properly. Remove the transaxle upper mount-to-bracket bolts, upper transaxle-to-engine bolts, front transaxle/engine bracket, and rear engine mount and bracket. Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. Ensure all wires and hoses are disconnected from the transaxle, then move the transaxle jack to clear the engine locating dowels, ensuring you keep the transaxle level.Installation of the transaxle follows the reverse of the removal. Ensure the torque converter's drive tangs engage with the recesses in the automatic transaxle fluid pump inner gear. This is confirmed by turning the torque converter while pushing it towards the transaxle until it fully engages. Ensure the marks made on the torque converter and driveplate align. Install all the driveplate-to-torque converter bolts before tightening any. Tighten the driveplate-to-torque converter bolts, driveaxle/hub nuts, and wheel lug nuts. Fill the transaxle with the correct fluid. Finally, adjust the shift cable.
