Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and raise the vehicle, supporting it securely on jackstands. For 2009 and earlier models, disconnect the front and rear driveshaft from the transfer case and support them temporarily with wire, then disconnect the speed sensor and 4WD motor electrical connectors. On 2006 and earlier 3.5L V6 engines, it may be necessary to disconnect and remove the rear exhaust pipe. Remove the transfer case wiring harness mounting bracket fastener and the bracket from the rear of the transfer case, followed by the transfer case adapter mounting bolts. Support the transfer case with a floor jack, and with assistance, use a screwdriver to pry the transfer case from the transmission and lower it from the vehicle. For 2011 and later models, remove the front exhaust pipe and muffler, the rear driveshaft, and the passenger's side driveaxle. Remove the transfer case right side support bracket mounting bolts and the bracket, then remove the transfer case-to-transaxle and transaxle-to-transfer case mounting bolts to separate the transfer case from the transaxle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to install a new O-ring seal to the case if necessary, tighten the exhaust system fasteners securely, tighten the driveshaft fasteners to the specified torque, secure the transfer case fasteners, refill the transfer case with the proper type and amount of fluid, and tighten the wheel lug nuts to the specified torque.
