The timing system is complex, and severe engine damage will occur if mistakes are made, so only highly experienced individuals should attempt this procedure. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, remove the engine cover, drivebelt, alternator, and power steering pulley without disconnecting the hoses. Remove the tensioner, idler pulley, NC compressor without opening refrigerant lines, and secure it out of the way. Raise the front of the vehicle, support it securely, and remove the right front wheel. Remove the lower and upper oil pans, radiator, and coolant reservoir. For 2011 and later models, support the engine from above, remove the upper engine mounts, and loosen the transaxle mount. Remove the valve covers, support the engine from below, disconnect the power steering hose, and remove the mount. Set the number one cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke, remove the crankshaft pulley, lift the engine mount bracket, and remove the timing chain cover while laying out the bolts in order. Verify the number one cylinder is still at TDC, paint match marks on the sprockets, compress the right chain tensioner, and remove the right upper chain guide, tensioner, and chain. Remove the right chain guide, oil pump chain cover, chain tensioner, oil pump sprocket, and chain, followed by the crankshaft gear for the oil pump and right timing chain, then remove the components for the left timing chain in the same order. Inspect all parts for wear and damage, checking the timing chain, sprockets, chain guides, and automatic tensioners for any issues. Clean the timing belt area, align the crankshaft key and
Camshafts with their TDC marks, install the timing chain guide, chains, tensioner arm, and upper cam-to-cam guide, then pull the pins out of both chain tensioners. Install the oil pump chain guide and tensioner, rotate the engine two complete turns clockwise, and verify that the marks on all six sprockets are properly set. Clean the timing chain cover sealing surfaces, apply RTV silicone sealant where necessary, tighten the timing chain cover bolts to the specified torque, and complete the installation in reverse order of removal.
