  Q: What Are the Signs of a Failing Water Pump?

  A: A failure in the water pump can cause serious engine damage due to overheating, and if a failure occurs at the pump seal, coolant will leak from the weep hole(s). Using a flashlight, look for traces of coolant residue or dried coolant tracks around the weep hole(s). If the shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound near the water pump while it's running, and a quick performance check can be done by making sure the coolant level is full, starting the vehicle and warming it up fully, turning the heater on in the passenger compartment, and checking for little or no heat output. A water pump may still be due for replacement even if it's not leaking or making any noise, and the only sure way to tell is to remove the pump and examine it closely for a loose or corroded impeller, a leaking shaft seal, or a worn shaft bearing.

  Q: How to Replace a Water Pump?

  A: Disconnect the negative battery terminal and drain the cooling system. Remove the water pump pulley bolts, drivebelt, timing belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, water inlet pipe bolts, power steering pump and bracket, and water pump. Remove the alternator and its bracket. Check the impeller for corrosion or missing fins. Clean the engine mounting surface and ensure bolt threads are clear of corrosion. Compare the new pump to the old one. Apply RTV sealant to the new gasket and install it on the water pump. Position the water pump and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Remove the drivebelt, timing belt covers, timing belt, idler pulley, and water pump. Inspect the pump for damage and replace if necessary. Clean the gasket surfaces before installing the pump. Install the pump mounting bolts in the correct holes and tighten to the torque. Refill the cooling system, check the drivebelt tension, reconnect the battery, and check for leaks.
