How to Replace the Fuel Pump and Fuel Level Sensor? Posted by Customer
A:
Remove the fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit from the fuel pump assembly and disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector. Loosen the two spring clamps and slide them off the short section of hose connecting the pump outlet pipe to the pipe on the underside of the pump assembly mounting flange. Remove the retainer that secures the fuel pump's inlet filter to the small bracket at the bottom of the pump and remove the inlet filter. Remove the screw that secures the small bracket at the bottom of the pump to the main pump bracket, then remove the small bracket. Remove the rubber mount located between the small bracket and the bottom of the pump. Remove the large rubber band that secures the pump to the main bracket and remove the pump. Remove the short section of hose from the old pump's outlet pipe. Discard the old pump assembly sealing ring and replace it with new ring. Pry the two mounting tabs for the fuel gauge sending unit loose from their plastic retainers, then slide the sending unit up and carefully remove it and set it next to the pump assembly. Disengage the ground wire receptacle from the side of the fuel pump assembly, remove the fuel gauge sending unit, disconnect the sending unit electrical connector, disengage the retainers for the upper part of the fuel pump assembly from the lower part of the pump assembly, disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector, disconnect the fuel pump outlet hose from the outlet pipe on the upper part of the pump assembly, detach the wiring harness clip from the lower part of the pump assembly, pull the two halves of the fuel pump assembly apart, disconnect the fuel pump outlet hose from the fuel pump outlet pipe, remove the cover from the lower part of the fuel pump assembly, pull the pump out of the cover, remove the rubber insulators from both ends of the pump, remove the fuel pump inlet filter from the pump, remove the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel pump cover, install new 0-rings on the fuel pressure regulator, remove the fuel pump assembly, remove the old fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator or fuel gauge sending unit, install the new filter, regulator or sending unit on the fuel pump, install the fuel pump assembly, remove the rear seat cushion and the carpeting underneath, remove the access cover screws and the access cover, disconnect the electrical connector and disconnect the quick connect fitting for the suction line, remove the sub fuel sender mounting flange bolts and remove the sub fuel sender from the fuel tank.
