To change the alternator, start by unbuckling the cable from the negative battery terminal and sliding off the alternator drive-belt. For models 1994 to 1997, simply flip open the cover that guards B+ terminal, remove the nut which secures alternator output cable at B+terminal stud and then disconnects battery output cable from stud. Then remove the electrical connector from an alternator and keep aside. Loosen the adjustment bolt and pivot bolt in order to slide it out. For models 1998 onwards, peel away the rubber protection on B+ terminal, get rid of B + nuts which holds alternator wire to a stud then unplug battery output wire via this stud. Disconnect harness connector from it and set aside wires leading to it. Before removing an alternator on four-cylinder models, remove tensioner adjusting bolt and mounting bolt for clearance purposes. Lossen up tensioner bracket bolt until tensioner bracket can be swiveled upwards. From beneath , take out pivot bolt & pull out old unit. On Sportage V6 models make sure to put down right front tire jackstands before loosening right wheel lug nuts so as to lift vehicle safely . Afterwards remove engine cover plus right front wheel in order to expose lower plus upper bolts for mounting brackets that holds it into position then take off all these fasteners before pulling it out finally . Regardless of model being serviced however; if replacing your car's alternator make sure that new one has same terminals , size , location or identification numbers like old one . Therefore look for a store policy concerning swapping a pulley or use puller which comes with some of them after buying either rebuilt /new type without pulley because they lack one at times when purchased initially . Last but not least install your replacement starter generator by carrying out above steps backwards while ensuring tightness of adjusting screws/ mountings than check charging current through charge indicator lamp to ascertain correct functionality.
