Inspect the fuel pump inlet strainer for contamination. If it's dirty, try cleaning the strainer with some clean solvent and an old toothbrush. If the strainer is too dirty to be cleaned while it's installed, remove it from the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit and try cleaning it again. If you still can't clean it adequately, replace it.

How to Remove the High Pressure Fuel Pump from the Cylinder Head? Posted by Customer

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, remove the air filler housing, disconnect the fuel pressure regulator valve electrical connector at the top of the valve cover, remove the ignition coil from cylinder number four, disconnect the canister purge control solenoid valve, disconnect the fuel supply line quick disconnect fitting, using special tool #09314-3Q100or equivalent, remove the nut from the high pressure fuel pump and delivery pipe, remove the junction block, then remove the high pressure fuel pipe, unscrew the fuel pump mounting bolts alternately, 1/2-turn at a time, until they are removed, remove the high-pressure fuel pump from the cylinder head, rotate the engine by hand until the lifter for the high pressure pump is at the lowest point, apply engine oil to the high-pressure pump 0-ring and set the pump on the cylinder head, install new bolts and tighten them, and the remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

Remove the cover from the lower part of the pump assembly and pull the pump out of the cover. Remove the rubber insulators from both ends of the pump and the fuel pump inlet filter from the pump. If replacing the fuel pressure regulator, remove it from the fuel pump cover, install new O-rings on the new fuel pressure regulator, and then proceed to install the new filter, regulator, or sending unit on the fuel pump.
