Park the vehicle with the front wheels pointing straight ahead, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, then raise the front and support it securely on jackstands. Apply the parking brake and remove the wheels along with the under-vehicle splash shield. Place a drain pan under the Rack And Pinion, detach the power steering pressure and return lines, and cap the ends to prevent excessive fluid loss and contamination, using a flare-nut wrench to avoid damaging the fittings. Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft to the steering shaft U-joint and remove the pinch bolt. Separate the tie-rod ends from the
Steering Knuckle arms. For 2005 and earlier models, remove the Rack And Pinion mounting fasteners, separate the intermediate shaft U-joint from the Rack And Pinion input shaft, and maneuver the Rack And Pinion down and out from the right side of the vehicle, checking the Rack And Pinion bushings for excessive wear or deterioration and replacing them if necessary. For 2006 and later models, remove the subframe after disconnecting the power steering line-to-subframe retainers, then detach the Rack And Pinion from the subframe. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to align the marks on the intermediate shaft U-joint and the Rack And Pinion input shaft, center the pinion if installing a new Rack And Pinion, tighten all fasteners to the specified torque, connect the power steering pressure and return hoses, fill the power steering pump reservoir with the recommended fluid, lower the vehicle, bleed the steering system, and have the alignment checked by a dealer service department or an alignment shop.
